COVID-19 And The New Normal - Johns Coffee

COVID-19 And The New Normal

It has been a strange year. But daily life here in Helsinki is stumbling back to something like

normality. Whether it is because of swift action by the government, general Finnish sisu or a natural

inclination towards social distancing, things in Finland are recovering. Even now, though, we all

encounter unexpected changes in the way we go about our day-to-day lives.

Of course, change doesn’t always have to be bad. Whether you are an essential worker who helped

us all get through this, or finding yourself back in the office for the first time in a while, there are

changes you can make that can help celebrate the new normal.

If you’re welcoming people back, what better way than with a cup of really good coffee?

You knew we’d get here, right?

Admittedly, we have something of a bias here, but at John’s Coffee, we are in this business because

we believe we can bring a little happiness into people’s lives. It’s not much, perhaps, but it’s how we

can help.

And if we can’t be there to see people being surprised by the taste of freshly brewed specialty coffee

in the workplace, that doesn’t mean we can’t imagine the scene.

On his first day back in office, Marko joins his boss Heidi in the meeting room. He pours

himself a coffee and sips it. He pauses, startled into a verbose outburst:

Marko asks: Uutta kahvia?

Heidi answers: On.

Marko: No niin.

Ah, Finnish, it’s a language of subtle nuance and context cues. Where one “no niin” can

communicate a thousand thoughts. Here, we like to think Marko is saying, “My word, what an

unexpected delight, this is truly superior coffee that tastes delicious and will increase my

productivity, positivity and alertness.” Something like that, anyway.

Here comes the science bit

Joking aside, coffee is a much-studied part of our daily lives, to the point where the field is rife with

contradictions. But in the world today, we believe that anything that can help make you happier and

help your team work better and more effectively together that tastes this good is worth investing

some time in.

And when doing so can help not only a local business, but also women coffee farmers in Rwanda or

the producers of our new line of coffee from Burundi, we think this is a win all round.

So, come by the coffee shop to treat yourself. Pick up a bag of coffee grounds to brew up a welcome

back that will get you a whole round of “no niin”s. Or start one of our subscriptions for your office

that will help truly establish what you want your new normal to be.

It’s good to be back.
